I Couldn't Wait

Yesterday, my daughter posted a new photo to her blog.  I was smitten.  I had to recreate it in fabric.  I had just the right hand-dyed piece for it, too.  With care, I could make two.  I sent her a message today asking permission to make it...but I couldn't wait for her answer.  I hope she'll forgive me:

Sailor, Take Warning - (C) 2014
This is the first of the new inventory of minis that I'm making for the 15th Annual Lacombe Art Show and Sale at the end of April.  Minis (5" x 7", matted to 8" x 10") will be taking up a great deal of my WIP time between now and then.  Minis -- and the finishing (blind-hemming facings, attaching labels and sleeves) of a few larger pieces that will be part of my booth's exhibit.  I need to do the office work too: up-dating the price list, ordering clear-pack envelopes, writing and printing artist's statements for each piece, and making sure I have enough prepared dowels for hanging.

That's not to say that other textile work will go by the board.  My latest 15 x 15 Group piece is faced and just needs the facing tacked down on the back, its label and its sleeve.  And "Macintosh's Garden" (or whatever I'm going to call it), is once again percolating on the design wall, now that I have the background all stitched together:

No, the 'grid on a grid' won't likely be done in black, as I want it to be much more subtle than that!  I'm just getting a sense of the proportions of it.  Clearly I need to work on the profusion of roses to balance them a bit more over the piece.  Right now they're sitting rather heavily on the bottom -- albeit this is simply the sketch on clear plastic pinned on top of the background!  :-)

But it's late afternoon...and with my next mini ready to work on, and the sunshine calling me for a jog...I'll link this up to WIP Wednesday at TNTN and be out the door.

I actually like the look of the small black squares and black outlines of the roses. Updates the classic Macintosh rose style, provides great tension and contrast of style within the piece ... love it. Sorry ... I guess I just prefer a contemporary look.

Not to confuse anything, for you ....

I can see why you "stole" Gina's photo for inspiration. She has her mother's eye for colour. Sailor, Take Warning is simply gorgeous. I'm still enjoying, watching you play with the roses. Good luck and have fun at the show in Lacombe. I wish I lived close enough to go.

Your pieces are breathtaking even before they are finished!
And I feel your pain about the related office work...

I am so impressed at how you are able to translate the crafty part of quiltmaking and the arty part of painting into something quite special to your aesthetic! Whew! That was DEEP!
