Okay, here's the deal. I took out 'word verification' for commenters because some were having trouble making it work.
Alas, today I received 2 comments for approval that were clearly spam (i.e. a combination of advertising and gibberish). I deleted them as spam, and then checked the 'Spam' folder in my comments section to see what -- if anything else -- was there. It was chock-a-block with spam dating back to October 20, which was just after I removed the word verification to make it easier for people to comment and thus enter my give away.
Sorry folks, but the Word Verification is back. It clearly keeps spam at bay -- and I like it that way!

Yes, I did the same thing, Margaret ...guess we have to develop our patience when leaving comments on blogs!
Another option is to adjust the settings of the comments in such a way that anonymous posts are not allowed.
